Medeu Skating Rink

Medeu is one of those magical spots where nature and adventure meet. Picture this: a high-altitude ice rink surrounded by stunning mountains and fresh air that just makes you feel alive. While walking around is enjoyable, conquering the steps leads to breathtaking views that are totally worth it. Who wouldn’t want a photo of that amazing backdrop?

The “ladder of health” has nearly 1000 steps, and wow, does it get your heart racing! Each step is a mini victory, especially when that thin air hits. I recommend taking it slow—there’s no rush when you’re soaking in the views. Taxi drivers can be found ready to whisk you down if your legs are exhausted!

The facilities here are top-notch, with plenty of cozy restaurants that serve delicious food at reasonable prices. There’s even a yurt cafe that became my favorite spot to unwind and enjoy the amazing vibe. However, it does get busy, especially on weekends, so I recommend visiting during the week for a more relaxed experience.

Almaty Zoo

Almaty Zoo, which opened its gates in 1937, is one of the oldest zoos in Kazakhstan and a delightful spot for families. I wandered through its 21 hectares and was excited to see lions, tigers, elephants, and even polar bears! The children’s joy was contagious as they delighted in the animals, especially the colorful zebras and playful monkeys.

However, some enclosures felt a bit cramped for the animals, which is a concern. The zoo shows its age in certain areas, but I found the ticket prices very reasonable. A stroll through the beautifully landscaped surroundings makes for a pleasant day as well, especially in the pleasant spring and summer months when more animals are active.

If you’re visiting with kids, I highly recommend stopping by. It’s an entertaining way to spend the day, providing both fun and education for young ones.

With a mini zoo and quirky attractions like an upside-down house, you’ll find plenty of fun. Families will appreciate the kids’ play areas and a variety of eateries to keep everyone happy.

Though I experienced some disappointment with the cable car being out of service, the scenic drive and local bus options made the journey worthwhile. The smog can be a bummer during winter, but the vibrant atmosphere up top and the thrill of the amusement park made it all better.

If you’re visiting with little ones or simply crave beautiful views and a bit of fun, Kok Tobe is definitely a must-see! Just grab a coffee, enjoy the stunning views, and soak in the joyful vibes of this unique spot.

The Aquapark in Almaty is a slice of tropical paradise right in the heart of the city. With its Hawaii-themed decor, it boasts rivers, a wave pool, and numerous slides that offer thrills for both kids and adults. I must say, the excitement of plummeting down those dark slides was exhilarating, even if I couldn’t see a thing! Just make sure to plan your visit on a weekday; weekends tend to get a little too crowded.

The food options are hit or miss. While some dishes like the local plov were enjoyable, the service at the restaurant can be quite slow. Be prepared to wait if you’re hungry after an action-packed day! On the bright side, the spa area is truly a gem, offering various saunas and massages, which are perfect for relaxing after a day of fun with family.
